New Design Basics Course – Seton Hall University

While the Adobe apps enable the creation of great digital storytelling and data visualization, the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center recognizes that users will approach these dynamic tools with a wide range of experience in design concepts. 

In an effort to expand equitable access to the Adobe resources, design experts Professor Christine Krus, Assistant Professor Christine Lhowe, M.F.A., and Ann Gallagher, art director for University Public Relations and Marketing, developed a course focused on basic design principles and best practices. Employing the help of Kate Sierra, instructional designer in the TLT Center, the course is delivered in a modular, interactive format that allows students to work through the content at their own pace. 

About the Course 

Through engaging course readings paired with practice activities, course completers will build their foundational knowledge of design concepts, such as typography, color, layout, and the appropriate use of university logos and brand assets. The course can be completed all at once in as little as 30 minutes, or used as a resource when completing an assignment or creating a submission for the Petersheim Academic Exposition. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate visual design through examples. 
  • Talk about the impact of visual design in everyday life. 
  • Describe the basics of design fundamentals, including composition, typography, color, and imagery.  
  • Apply basic design fundamentals to coursework.
